CAMERON McKenzie-McHarg’s Australian men’s eight rowing team put in a valiant effort in their Olympic final over night but finished in sixth position.

Germany took out the gold medal while Canada snagged silver and Great Britain took bronze.

The Australian team were within less than half a second of the bronze medal winning Brits and looked an outside chance throughout the race.

McKenzie-McHarg grew up in Leongatha.

Fellow former South Gippslander Drew Ginn and his men’s four team are vying for a spot in final after tonight’s semi-final.

The Australian men’s four team are medal favourites.
