Calling all folk lovers

LEONGATHA locals Mandy Breeze and Doug Kelly are on a mission to gather like minded people interested in setting up a monthly folk music gathering.

Folk tunes: Mandy Breeze and Doug Kelly pictured in their Leongatha home playing traditional folk instruments, the bodhran (Mandy) and Irish bouzouki (Doug).

The musical duo moved here in April last year, coming from the warmer New South Wales climates of Clunes, about 30 minutes from Byron Bay.

About six people are what they require to complete a band group. They have already approached Wendy at Serafino’s who was happy for them to use their downstairs venue.

They were also warmly welcomed for performances at the Leongatha Parish of the Anglican Diocese of Gippsland.

Mandy takes on vocals and many other instrumentals. Doug is also a competent multi instrumentalist in the folk genre, also playing the bag pipes.

Doug was an early mover and shaker in the Australian folk music scene during the early 1980s. He toured around Australia, playing upwards of 300 shows per year.

Their sound was avant-garde for the times, introducing world music to Australian listeners well before that genre became popularized.

Their sampling and overlaying intertwined mixing with indigenous didgeridoo sounds.

The eponymously titled album Tansey’s Fancy was the only album that group ever cut, pioneering the concept of a multi-cultural band.

Churinga was later formed and saw the group make appearances at two consecutive Longford Music Festivals, one of the premier music events in Tasmania and Australia at the time.
