CFA station rejected
SOUTH Gippsland Shire Council has refused to grant the Country Fire Authority permission to build a new fire station in Leongatha’s Bair Street.
Councillors voted five to three at yesterday’s council meeting, saying the land – owned by the CFA – was needed for future retail expansion in Leongatha.
David Chugg, CFA acting operations manager for district 9, was disappointed.
“We have gone through an extensive process of going through other sites but they do not service the volunteers that live and work in the community,” he said.
Council refused the permit on the grounds the station would rob the Leongatha central business district of future retail expansion opportunities, and would have an adverse effect on traffic and pedestrians.
Cr Jim Fawcett abstained from voting due to a conflict of interest.
