Unity to advance ’Burra

THE new leaders of the Korumburra Business Association will continue to ensure Korumburra remains a vibrant centre in South Gippsland.

The association’s new president Noelene Cosson said the group would work positively with South Gippsland Shire Council to secure the attention the town deserves.

“We need to work together and support each other by building confidence within the community. This not only sends a positive message to our community, but also to council and to other authorities,” she said.

“Korumburra is a great town and has a lot going for it. It is a true country town without all the chain stores, but a unique shopping hub with locally run businesses.”

The association is encouraging businesspeople and residents to take part in council’s OurSay forum that is now seeking suggestions for what the community would like to see $400,000 spent on in Korumburra.

The group is represented in discussions about the future of the Korumburra railway station and now has its own sign on the community town entry sign.

Mrs Cosson was elected president at the association’s annual general meeting at the Korumburra railway station last Wednesday, taking over from Commonwealth Bank manager Steve Bone.

Shirley Arestia of MJA Accounting and Rick’s Hairdressers remains as secretary, with Brian Hess of Korumburra Florist vice president and Trudi Mantell of Tru Business Management the treasurer.

Mrs Cosson said for an affordable membership fee of $50, businesses receive community advocacy and possibly promotion on the association’s Facebook page, as well as access to competitions.

The association is now running a word search on its Facebook page that raises awareness of the variety of businesses available in Korumburra.

Members have also arranged for displays in vacant shop windows. The current show promotes the activities of Coal Creek Community Park and Museum while temporarily filling empty shops.

The annual town Christmas celebration is planned for Saturday, December 17, with entertainment, Santa Claus in the street and a colouring competition to encourage shoppers into town.

“We now have 54 members, which is very encouraging,” Mrs Cosson said.

Mrs Cosson and her husband Rob run dairy business Sure Pulse Australia. They have been in business in Korumburra for 30 years and Mrs Cosson has served with the pool committee and swimming club, and is a member of the Korumburra Roundtable.

They raised their three daughters in town.
