Weather keeps pool numbers down

THE decrease in attendance across the South Gippsland Shire Council’s five outdoor pools has been blamed on poor weather conditions.

This season over 59,000 people attended the Foster, Korumburra, Poowong, Toora and Mirboo North pools, compared to 63,000 people last season.

Over 10,000 of those visits were due to school swimming programs and carnivals.

Mirboo North was the only pool to have increased attendance figures this season.

Council’s recreation officer Ian Murphy said the biggest impact on attendance was the weather.

The Poowong pool was closed from February 22 due to significant water loss, which also contributed to lower attendance figures.

The Mirboo North pool was closed for two days due to a plant problem and the Foster pool had to cancel a school booking due to broken glass around the pool.

Apart from Toora which is run on a different management system, the temperature forecast needs to be 25 degrees Celcius or higher for the pools to open, unless there is a booking in place.

Mirboo North and Korumburra were both open five days more than last year, while Foster had the same amount of days open.

Poowong was closed for some of February and all of March and therefore its days open suffered accordingly.

The council’s outdoor pools cost around $800 to $1000 per day to operate during the season, when the pool is opened.

Councillor Don Hill said the cost per visitor to outdoor pools is less than the cost per visitor to the region’s public libraries.

“Comparing asset to asset, the pools stack up quite well,” he said.

Mr Murphy said the operational expenditure varies with each pool.

“Toora has a longer season and therefore the cost is slightly higher, but it also provides a higher level of service,” he said.

“Pools are valued by communities and are generally very well utilised. It would be hard to argue communities don’t strongly value them.”
