The Great Southern Star in Leongatha was established in 1890 and is locally owned by the Giles family.
Fourth generation members of the family Tony Giles and Helen Bowering oversee the management of the Star and the sister newspaper the Yarram Standard.
The Star is an award-winning newspaper offering a wide selection of local news, sports and community events along with classified advertising, quality display advertising, real estate and regular features including the quarterly South Coast Farmer, South Coast Tourist News, Wedding and Home Improvement lift-outs.
With a weekly paid circulation of 5,200, and a readership of 18,600 the Star is the biggest selling newspaper in the South Gippsland Shire reaching people in towns from Yarram to Foster, all along the South Gippsland Highway to Leongatha, Korumburra, Inverloch, Wonthaggi, Phillip Island and out to Mirboo North and most towns in between.
One of South Gippsland’s premier towns, Leongatha is situated on the South Gippsland Highway, about 130km south east of Melbourne.
Leongatha is a farming hub for the thriving beef and dairy farming community and provides an excellent range of schooling options catering for preschool, primary, secondary and tertiary students.
The town offers a quality range of shopping, food outlets and cinema.
Leongatha has always provided excellent sporting facilities including the state-of-the-art indoor aquatic centre, indoor basketball, football oval, netball and tennis courts, velodrome, two premier golf courses, table tennis, badminton and walking, cycling and horse riding on the Great Southern Rail Trail.
