Coal seam action

Coal seam action

Public interest: about 150 people filled the Leongatha RSL yesterday to hear South Gippsland Shire Council call for a moratorium on coal seam gas.

SOUTH Gippsland Shire Council will demand the State Government ban coal seam gas exploration and mining in the region until the process is deemed safe.

Council yesterday (Wednesday) passed a motion calling for a moratorium, applauded by about 150 people objecting to coal seam gas exploration in the region.

The council’s action follows similar action by Bass Coast Shire Council, and provides an united stance against the controversial mining method.

Councillors raised concerns about coal seam gas mining threatening agriculture, food security and the environment.

Protestors have held a series of meetings around the shire in recent weeks and another is planned for Korumburra tonight.
