Dreads to drop for donations
KORUMBURRA’S Ricky Hurst has a defining feature – a head full of natural red dreadlocks.
He is ready to put them all on the line for the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave.
Despite aiming to shave his head in March, Ricky is starting his fundraising now and has already received a lot of support.
“It’s up to a few hundred dollars already and that is after just a few days of promoting it,” he said.
“A few friends have offered to build some posters and promote it around the schools and places like that.”
The 21 year old mechanic said after having the ginger dreads for almost four years, he decided it was time for a change.
“They have got to the length at work where they are hard to keep out of trouble,” he said.
“I don’t want them to get ripped off or have them harm myself or others, and they are pretty heavy.
“I thought I would do it for the Leukaemia Foundation and try and raise awareness, and if I can get a few dollars for shaving them as well that would be awesome.”
With the support he has already received, Ricky thinks he will reach his goal of $2500 quickly but will keep pushing for as much as he can.
Ricky initially grew the dreadlocks to be out of the ordinary and has now become attached to his hair.
“I will miss them. I will probably keep them,” he said.
“A few people have said I should sell the dreads for $5 each or something but I couldn’t so that.
“I have had these guys for four years and I am not letting them go fully.”
