Josh Pyke for mayor

Josh Pyke: the Australian singer songwriter played a brilliant performance at the Meeniyan Town Hall on Saturday night.

AUSTRALIAN singer songwriter Josh Pyke asked his Meeniyan Town Hall crowd on Saturday night whether they’d vote for him as mayor.

His platform was a bit flimsy, with allusions to “more open mic nights”. But the crowd was ready to give him their support anyway. Pyke has a very persuasive way about him, and is much more interesting than your archetypal grey-suited politician.

If part of the deal was him singing at every council meeting, he would romp in.

Meeniyan was Pyke’s last gig on an extensive tour. He will soon hit the studio again.

Playing new and old songs – including Private Education and Middle of the Hill – the crowd was enthralled. The only sour note was a ‘look at me’ member of the crowd who insists on coming along to the Lyrebird Arts Council gigs and making a sound that resembles a demented Spanish dancer.

Pyke, to his credit, did not miss a beat.
