Ruby’s rough cut

Please don”t: Nationals Leader Peter Ryan discusses the Ruby Road/South Gippsland Highway intersection with concerned residents.

GIPPSLAND South MP Peter Ryan has urged South Gippsland Shire to review its decision to close the eastern arm of Ruby Road between Coalition Creek and the road’s intersection with the South Gippsland Highway. He is worried the action will increase the risk of accidents.

After inspecting the Y-shaped intersection with residents on Thursday, The Nationals leader said he had reservations about whether the intersection would be improved by the closure of the road. "Without substantial improvement to the western arm, I think it is unlikely closure of the eastern side will improve driver safety," Mr Ryan said. "VicRoads needs to build a dedicated right-hand turning lane on the South Gippsland Highway to ensure vehicles approaching the western arm of Ruby Road from Leongatha can turn safely.

He said signs and road marking also need improvement. Mr Ryan said following a petition from residents, council voted unanimously last October to leave both arms of the intersection open until improvements were undertaken to ensure the road could accommodate the extra traffic.
