Stony Creek floods

Making a splash: drivers had to take extra caution while driving over the submerged section of Meeniyan-Promontory Road.

HEAVY rain that stopped traffic in Melbourne today (Tuesday) resulted in Stony Creek bursting  its banks.

Water rushed across Meeniyan-Promontory Road just south of Meeniyan and engulfed the bridge over the creek.

Natural debris such as small branches, bark and dirt were left clinging to the rails of the bridge, while the creek seemed to resemble a lake either side of the road as water levels were above fences.

Warnings from the Victorian SES on Monday afternoon advised campers around Gippsland of possible flash flooding.

The overnight rainfall was the heaviest rain Melbourne has seen in 34 years but luckily South Gippsland managed to miss the brunt of the storm.
