Towns get smart

Raising the flags: Phil Piper, Andrew McCarthy, Kate Jackson, Judy Doolan, Geraldine Bate, Chris Hamilton, Helen Page and Ilan Goldman are excited by the prospect of an energy efficient town.

MIRBOO North could be one of the newest sustainable towns in Gippsland following a meeting last week.
Around 10 enthusiastic Mirboo North residents attended a sustainable smart town program meeting, complemented by many more in meetings in Venus Bay, Meeniyan and Korumburra.
The presentations were carried out by Judy Doolan, organiser of the program, and South Gippsland Shire Council officers Barbara Look, Marzia Maurilli and Christine Hamilton.
Mrs Doolan explained the implementation of the program in Heyfield, explaining the different ways to reduce a town’s carbon footprint as well as reduce water, energy and waste consumption.
Despite being in the early stages, the residents were excited about the prospect of the idea taking place.
“I think this is something we could definitely implement in Mirboo North,” Geraldine Bate said.
And while the residents have not planned any further meetings, they have all been given brochures and will continue to gauge community interest in the idea.
