Looking up: Don Kennedy and Geoff Hartshorn monitor the transit of Venus.

THE eyes of the world may have been on Venus yesterday, but the people of Tarwin Lower and Venus Bay saw an opportunity to shine the spotlight on themselves.

The blokes of the Venus Bay, Tarwin Lower and District Men’s Shed hosted an event at the Tarwin Lower Recreation Reserve to commemorate the transit of Venus.

With Venus Bay sharing a name with the planet, the community seized the chance to draw attention to their coastal hamlets.

The rare astronomical event saw the planet Venus move across the Sun, and the silhouetted planet was visible through a solarscope or as Tony Swinden showed, through a piece of glass from welding goggles.

Children from Tarwin Lower Primary School offered an insight into the event and the story behind the naming of Venus Bay.
